Mr. Smith joined Saxe Doernberger & Vita, P.C. in 2008. Since coming to SDV, Mr. Smith has focused his practice on complex insurance coverage disputes concerning construction defect and damage claims and commercial general liability, excess liability, employee fraud and dishonesty, disability income, and subcontractor default policies. he has also worked extensively on behalf of medical service providers in litigation arising out of the healthcare provider/payer relationship, including reimbursement claims.
Prior to joining SDV, Mr. Smith worked for six years at a Hartford firm handling complex employee benefit litigation, primarily under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 ("ERISA"), in federal courts throughout the country and in administrative appeals involving major insurance companies. He also represented plaintiffs in federal court actions concerning employers' interference with their rights under the Family and Medical Leave Act. At the University of Connecticut School of Law, Mr. Smith served on the editorial board of the Connecticut Journal of International Law and interned at the United States Attorney's Office in Hartford. Prior to practicing law, he was an investment advisor at UBS PaineWebber. Mr. Smith lives in the Hartford area with his wife and two sons.
