Jonathan W. Chambers is an experienced litigator whose practice is dedicated solely to advocating for policyholders in complex coverage disputes. As a resident of SDV’s Southeast Office, Jonathan’s national practice focuses on the construction industry, particularly with respect to claims and litigated disputes involving commercial general liability, builder’s risk, and professional liability insurance.
Jonathan has successfully resolved coverage disputes at all levels of state and federal courts, as well as in mediation and arbitration. In addition to his active litigation practice, Jonathan advises insurance brokers and risk management teams on all types of coverage programs. He assists clients with strengthening contractual risk transfer and insurance coverage at the time of contract drafting and negotiation, as well as during policy placements and renewals.
A recent example of one of Jonathan’s most impactful cases involved an eleven-story, mixed-use residential and commercial building under construction in Florida that suffered water damage during construction. The issue was whether the leaks that happened on different days, spread out over many months, constituted one “occurrence” to be covered under the general contractor’s builder’s risk policy. After the filing of competing summary judgment motions, the federal court determined that the water damage was covered as a single “occurrence,” resulting in a substantial recovery to the general contractor.
Jonathan is well-versed in the intricacies of insurance coverage law, having joined the firm with an extensive background in first-party insurance litigation where he represented homeowners, businesses, Homeowners Associations, and Condominium Associations in cases ranging from disagreements over the cost of repairs to complex issues concerning the availability of coverage and policy interpretation. His experience also includes representing healthcare professionals in proceedings before the Department of Health.
Jonathan graduated with his Juris Doctorate summa cum laude from Nova Southeastern University. He was a senior staff member of Nova Law Review and was the recipient of the American Law Institute’s Scholarship and Leadership graduation award.
